Frequently Asked Questions
Do I actually need a hearing conservation program?
If any of your employees are exposed to noise at or above 85 decibels averaged over an 8-hour shift, OSHA requires you to have a hearing conservation program under 29 CFR 1910.95. This includes audiometric testing, baseline comparisons, threshold shift tracking, employee notification, and training—all documented and audit-ready. Most manufacturing environments with stamping presses, CNC machines, grinders, saws, or similar equipment exceed this threshold.
How is Safen different from enterprise EHS software?
Enterprise EHS platforms like Intelex, VelocityEHS, or Cority cost $50,000 or more and take months to implement. They’re built for companies with dedicated EHS departments. Safen is built for the safety manager who also handles HR, training, and a dozen other responsibilities. It focuses specifically on hearing conservation compliance, does it extremely well, and costs a fraction of what those platforms charge.
What about state-specific requirements?
This is one of the areas where Safen stands apart. States like Washington and Oregon run their own OSHA programs (called State Plans) with rules that differ from federal OSHA. For example, Washington and Oregon prohibit using age correction when determining whether a Standard Threshold Shift has occurred—but still allow it for OSHA 300 Log recordability. Most national compliance tools get this wrong. Safen handles these state-specific rules correctly.
What does Safen actually do?
Safen automates the hardest parts of OSHA hearing conservation compliance. You upload scanned audiogram results (even photos from a phone will work) and Safen’s AI extracts the data, compares it to baselines, detects Standard Threshold Shifts (including age-corrected calculations), calculates a risk score for each employee, and generates complete audit packets. When an OSHA inspector shows up, you hit one button and everything they’re going to ask for is organized and ready.
Is my employees’ hearing data secure?
Yes. Audiometric data is protected health information under HIPAA, and Safen is fully HIPAA-compliant. All data is encrypted with AES-256 encryption both in transit and at rest. We maintain Business Associate Agreements with all relevant service providers, and our data retention policies comply with OSHA’s recordkeeping requirements.
How long does it take to get started?
Most companies are up and running within a day. You create your account, add your employees, and upload your audiogram results. Safen’s AI handles the data extraction and analysis automatically. If you have years of historical audiograms to upload, our Professional and Enterprise plans include onboarding support to help with the transition.
What if I’m not sure whether my company needs this?
Book a free compliance review. We’ll walk through your current hearing conservation program, identify any gaps in your documentation or processes, and show you exactly where you stand. There’s no cost and no obligation—if you’re already in good shape, we’ll tell you.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Safen is billed annually but there are no long-term contracts. If Safen isn’t the right fit, you can cancel at the end of your billing period. We’ll export your data so you don’t lose anything.
